When you're preparing for a job interview, most of your focus is probably on answering the employer's questions. One key to job interview success is the questions that you ask them interviewer!
Here are seven smart questions to ask employers at your next job interview.
1. What does success look like in this role?
This question shows you're already thinking about performance and contribution. It also gives you valuable insight into the employer’s expectations and how your performance will be evaluated in the first 3, 6, or 12 months.
Success can look different for everyone, so make sure that the company's definition of success matches your expectations as well. It’s important that when starting at a new job, expectations are managed and discussed, ensuring everyone is on the same page.
2. Can you describe the team I’d be working with?
Understanding the team structure, dynamics, and key players helps you imagine what your day-to-day will actually look like. It also gives you a sense of the company's culture—something that can't always be captured on a careers page.
3. What are the biggest challenges facing the team (or company) right now?
This is a great way to learn about pain points or internal changes that could affect your role. It also shows initiative and a willingness to be part of the solution. It’s important to know and understand the situation you may be walking into.

4. How would you describe the company culture here?
Beyond perks and policies, company culture affects everything—from communication to work-life balance. This question gives you a window into how people treat each other, how decisions are made, and what the employer truly values.
5. What opportunities are there for professional growth?
Whether you're transitioning from the military or looking to advance in your civilian career, development matters. This question shows you're ambitious and forward-thinking—and helps you assess if the company invests in its people.
6. How does the company support veterans (or diverse backgrounds)?
If you're a veteran or come from a non-traditional background, this question lets you gauge how inclusive and supportive the employer is. Do they offer mentorships? ERGs? Training tailored to your transition? Their answer speaks volumes.

7. What are the next steps in the interview process?
Close strong with this classic. It shows you're engaged, ready to move forward, and respectful of the employer’s process. It also gives you clarity on timelines so you’re not left guessing.
